Nutrition Goes to School (NGTS) Events in Subah Sub-district, Sambas District, 23 May 2023

School Community for Nutrition of Subah Sub-District, Sambas District, West Kalimantan Province held a Nutrition Goes to School (NGTS) event “Gebyar NGTS” on May 23, 2023. This event was opened with remarks from Mr. Yuri Irawadi (Head of Education and Culture Office of Subah Sub-district) and Dr. Jess Fernandez (Deputy Director for Program of SEAMEO RECFON).“Gebyar NGTS” in Subah Sub-district consisted of several activities such as 1) NGTS Aerobic Exercise; 2) Nutrition Ambassador Competition followed by 4 shortlisted participants from Sabung Stanggak Elementary School 8, Satai D Elementary School 7, Trans Sabung Elementary School 14, and Sungai Enau Mejo Elementary School 19, and student from Satai D Elementary School 7 became the winner ; 3) Local Culinary Exhibition of Sambas traditional foods, snacks, and porridges; and 4) Food Bazaar managed by teachers, students, and parents of Trans Sabung Elementary School 14.

School Community for Nutrition of Subah Sub-District has been initiated by the school principal of Satai D Elementary School 7 since 2021 and currently has 5 member schools from Satai D Elementary School 7, Sungai Enau Mejo Elementary School 19, Sabung Stanggak Elementary School 8, S Talenta Sungai Kajang Elementary School, and Trans Sabung Elementary School 14. The member schools are aware that NGTS, as part of school health and nutriton programs, is essential in improving student’s health and nutrition status which closely related with their academic performance. Therefore, they actively conduct collaborative activities related to NGTS every year since they attended Training on School-children Nutrition which was conduted by Education and Culture Office of Sambas District, SEAMEO RECFON, and Pontianak Health Polytechnic in 2021.

Nutrition Goes to School (NGTS) Event in Selakau Junior High School 4, 8 June 2023

Selakau Junior High School 4, school partner for Nutrition Goes to School (NGTS) Program in Sambas District, West Kalimantan Province, held a NGTS event “Giat Gelar Karya” with the theme “My Spicy Porridge, My Traditional Food” or “Bubur Pedasku, Makanan Tradisionalku” on June 8, 2023. This event was a nutrition education effort for students to fulfill balanced nutrition from local food. In addition, this event was also part of the project activity to strengthen the values of Pancasila (“Kegiatan Proyek Penguatan Profil Pelajar Pancasila”) to the students’ independence and creativity through experience in processing and selling traditional nutrient-rich foods.

NGTS events in Sambas District highlights the implementation of NGTS program which can be synergized with existing school programs to develop optimum students’ potential and capacity. SEAMEO RECFON really appreciates the school efforts to make innovative school-based nutriton programs. We hope this events can inspire and should be adopted by other schools for a better quality of school-based nutriton programs.
